The Termessos Epigraphy Project (TEP) is a long-term scientific research initiative conducted under the auspices of the Termessos Excavations, directed by Prof. Dr. Mustafa KOÇAK of Antalya Bilim University, within the framework of the permit and excavation licence granted by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The project is directed by Prof. Dr. Fatih ONUR of the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Letters, Akdeniz University.

The primary objective of TEP is to locate in the field, one by one, all inscriptions published to date from Termessos within the city, and to enter these data together with their geographical coordinates into a web-based epigraphic database. The resulting system is designed to be queryable by inscription type, period, content and spatial location, and offers a spatial analysis infrastructure that reveals epigraphic densities and patterns across different zones of the city. In addition to locating and documenting published inscriptions, newly discovered inscriptions are also recorded in the field, added to the database, and prepared for publication.

Traditional epigraphic research has largely placed the text at the centre of inquiry; the material on which an inscription is carried, its position within the physical fabric of the city, and its spatial relationships with neighbouring documents have generally been treated as secondary concerns. TEP inverts this approach by placing the inscription–space relationship at the heart of the research. Questions such as which types of documents cluster in which zones of the city, the patterns established with public or religious spaces, and the distribution of inscriptions belonging to different periods can only be answered within this holistic framework.

Finding a new inscription is certainly important, but re-evaluating published documents in their proper context can yield results that are scientifically far more significant and consequential.

Termessos — The unconquered city of the Taurus

Termessos

Located within the boundaries of Güllük Dağı National Park in the modern province of Antalya, at an altitude of approximately 1,050 metres, Termessos is one of the best-preserved urban sites of the ancient world. This rugged mountain city of Pisidia resisted the siege of Alexander the Great in 333 BC and was never taken — one of the rare retreats Alexander made during his Anatolian campaign.

The city secured wide-ranging autonomy through a treaty of alliance with Rome in 70 BC and remained politically and economically active until the third century AD. Its urban fabric — theatre, agora, temples, and necropolis zones — survives almost intact.

TermessosThe history of epigraphic research at Termessos begins with the Termessos section of Lanckoroński's Städte Pamphyliens und Pisidiens (1892), complemented by G. Cousin's 1899 article Inscriptions de Termessos. The fundamental reference work for the site remains Rudolf Heberdey's Tituli Asiae Minoris (TAM) III (1941). This corpus — comprising honorary decrees, public correspondence, cult dedications and funerary inscriptions — contains 944 inscription records. TAM III was followed by Bülent İplikçioğlu and his team's four-volume Epigraphische Forschungen in Termessos series (1991–2007). New inscription publications continue to appear today through the contributions of Prof. Dr. A. Vedat Çelgin, Prof. Dr. Murat Arslan, Prof. Dr. Ferit Baz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Erten, Prof. Dr. Nihal Tüner Önen and Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Sami Öztürk. With these publications, the total number of published inscriptions has reached approximately 1,300. Termessos has thus become one of the best-documented epigraphic centres in Anatolia. Nevertheless, the spatial distribution and original contexts of this rich material within the city have never been systematically documented. TEP aims to evaluate the inscriptions — for the first time — together with their textual content and spatial contexts, thereby establishing the epigraphic topography of Termessos.


Why Termessos?

The greatest methodological challenge for a project that places the inscription–space relationship at the heart of research is obvious: an inscription that has been moved, reused as spolia, or removed to a storeroom can no longer offer reliable information about its original location. Locational epigraphic work only acquires genuine scholarly value at sites where the great majority of inscriptions preserve their original or near-original contexts.

Termessos offers an exceptional opportunity in this respect.

The city was abandoned in antiquity and never reoccupied. Traces of the Christian period are very rare; there was no large-scale rebuilding programme that would have necessitated the reuse of earlier material. In Late Antiquity only limited repairs and adaptations of certain spaces are attested — there is, for instance, not a single church in the city. The urban fabric of this mountain city, whose walls even Alexander could not breach, has survived to the present day with extraordinary integrity.

The methodological implications of this are decisive: at Termessos, the findspot of an inscription is highly likely to represent its original context. The city is therefore one of the rare ancient settlements where it is possible to analyse not only the textual content of inscriptions but also their spatial distribution, visibility, and urban function in a reliable manner. This capacity for systematic investigation of the relationship between inscription and space makes Termessos an ideal field for the research in question.


Technology and Method

Web-Based Epigraphic Database and GIS Infrastructure — The complete published inscription corpus of Termessos is being entered into a relational database supported by geographic information systems (GIS). This digital corpus system, developed by our team, allows cross-querying by inscription type, period, content and spatial location, and enables the production of epigraphic density maps and spatial pattern analyses.

Mobile Application: Epi-Field Since Termessos has no internet access, the field application Epi-Field has been designed to operate entirely offline, putting the complete published inscription corpus in the researcher's pocket. Team members can query inscriptions in the field by number, text or keyword in a practical and detailed manner, marking located inscriptions and checking them off the list. This makes it possible at any moment to see which inscriptions have been found and which are still being sought, measurably speeding up field work.

Digital Documentation — Digital project coordinator Dr. Aykan AKÇAY applies Structure from Motion (SfM) and various other digital documentation and imaging methods to produce three-dimensional models of inscriptions that are particularly worn or difficult to read, enabling far more reliable reading and interpretation of the text. This facilitates the re-evaluation of transcriptions that could not be completed in the field, the reassessment of contested readings, and the verification of previous editions; the resulting models also constitute a permanent digital archive of the current state of preservation of the inscriptions.

Online Translation Platform: Epi-Desk Inscriptions identified in the field are assigned as translation tasks to students via Epi-Desk, a web-based platform, with each inscription's reference information, photograph and Greek transcription presented on a single screen. Students submit Turkish and English translations from their own devices; completed translations are assessed, corrected, rated and approved by editors. Every change made to the text by students and editors is recorded at the word level, and the project's progress, attendance list, student surveys and participant contributions are monitored in real time.


Training and Education

Field training is different; experience makes the difference.

TEP offers undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to experience all dimensions of epigraphic research first-hand. Through on-site lectures organised during fieldwork, students attend expert presentations on epigraphic method, the history of Termessos, and the central problems of Greek epigraphy.

The language work conducted via the online translation platform ensures that students acquire not only field experience but also the skills of reading and translating ancient Greek. This editor-supervised system creates a learning environment that meets academic standards.

TEP positions students not merely as observers but as active participants in the research process. Inscription location, coordinate recording, photography, digital documentation and translation are experienced as successive and complementary stages of a single workflow. Termessos, where the great majority of published inscriptions preserve their original context, functions as an unparalleled laboratory for this holistic form of training. Students locate and document an inscription in the field, then translate and interpret it at the desk — grasping the full cycle of epigraphic research. In this way, they leave the project not merely with experience, but with field competence, language skills and a researcher's identity. The multi-layered benefit that TEP offers carries a lasting value for its student participants.


2026 Season — First Season: E1 Necropolis

TEP's first field campaign is being conducted in the Termessos E1 Necropolis between 8–31 July 2026. This zone is one of the most densely inscribed necropolis areas of the city, and offers an ideal starting point for building the project's spatial database and testing its methodology.
